I recently attended a discussion on Leadership Selection. It was agreed that one of the strongest skill sets of a leader is, their ability to self motivate, their self awareness, their self regulation and their ability to influence others. These qualities are known as Emotional Intelligence. According to Daniel Goleman, Author of Vital Lies, Simple Truths, these skills are more important to business success then academic learning.

By the way, we identified the strongest trait of effective leaders is having a vision that translates into sharing success and working for the common good. In other words, taking your staff, shareholders, suppliers and customers to the top with you!
